Chipping hands out advanced copies of his latest novel to Bret, Jughead, Donna, Jonathan, and Joan. Chipping is the author of the Baxter Brothers books Bret claims it was just a bit of Halloween fun, and if Jughead feels they took it too far, then he could leave, though Jughead decides to stay. Donna explains that it means Jughead belongs now. It’s Stonewall Prep tradition that shouldn’t be taken personally. Chipping has freed Jughead from the coffin. The following morning, Bret, Donna, Jonathan, and Joan arrive to find that Mr. They put Jughead in a coffin and lock him in for the night. Within seconds, Jughead collapses to the ground and is surrounded by Donna, Bret, Joan, and Jonathan. However, he’s not going anywhere after being drugged by Donna. His next stop is the town’s newspaper office. He’s searched through years of articles, and so far he hasn’t come up with anything about missing students. Donna approaches Jughead and offers him some coffee as he does some research into the Stonewall Four. Bret bets that Jughead can make it the Stonewall Five as they’re overdue for a vanishing.īret, Joan, Jonathan, and Donna drug Jughead Similar to the Stonewall Four, Joan remarks. Bret surmises this would be a horrible way to die. The story centers around a guy who is sealed behind a wall of bricks and is never seen or heard from again. Bret's favorite Poe story is The Cask of the Amontillado. Bret scoffs, remarking there’s nothing scary about Lovecraft. Chipping tasks Jonathan, Jughead, Donna, Bret, and Joan with bringing in work from their favorite horror writers. Chipping tallies up the votes and determines that Story C, belonging to Donna is the winner. While Jughead may not be as privileged as Bret, he has friends and family that care for him, unlike his opposer. He grabs Bret by his shirt and threatens him. It isn’t until Bret mentions Jellybean that Jughead responds. Through all this, Jughead maintains his composure. He mentions how Jughead's mom abandoned him and how his dad is a drunk. He continues to pick at Jughead while Donna, Joan, and Jonathan watch. First throwing a paper ball at him and then asking about his placement in the Southside Serpents. While writing their stories, Bret tries to get a rise out of Jughead. Jonathan watches Bret antagonizing Jughead The exercise proves that there’s no single way to tell a story. They’ll read all the endings and decide the winner by vote. They’ve each been given a copy of the same mysteries with the final chapter omitted, in which the murderer’s identity would be revealed. Chipping cancels the seminar he initially had planned for Jughead, Bret, Donna, Joan, and Jonathan and instead they will be having an evening session. He explains that Stonewall Prep has no tolerance for fighting. After poking at Jughead’s story, he sets his sights on Jughead himself, referencing his troubled past. Jughead on the other hand was unimpressed, much to Donna’s amusement, which angers Bret, who goes on to take aim at Jughead’s story, ripping it apart before Mr. Chipping asks for the group’s thoughts, Joan and Jonathan nervously agree that his story was astonishing. īret reads his story in front of the group. The book's author, Herman Melville’s biggest fear was that Moby Dick would be seen as a fable. Jughead believes that the whale in Moby Dick holds no sense of symbolism. Chipping enters the room and they begin discussing the book. Jughead attends the book discussion of Moby Dick at Stonewall Prep, where Bret introduces him to Donna, Jonathan, and Joan.
